Are the things you're doing to relieve your pain the reason it keeps coming back?

Find out what's really causing pain. Stop wasting effort. Start making real progress - that lasts.

Back Pain & Sports Injury specialist

You just want to be back to normal

If you’re here, you’ve probably already tried to do something about your back pain, running injury or other sports injury.

You’ve rested. Followed exercises. Worked on your strength. Had treatment. Asked friends. Searched online.

You just want to get back to normal and enjoy your runs, hikes, training and everyday life again.

So why are you still stuck?

It isn’t that you’ve been doing nothing.  But most advice follows the same pattern.

Settle the painful area or make your body stronger.

Both can be useful.

Settling the painful area is important, but it’s pain relief. It doesn’t necessarily change the things that caused the problem in the first place.

And if you strengthen a body that’s still moving, loading and coping with life in the same way, you’re often just building a stronger version of the same problem.

You feel better for a while. You get back to what you love.

Then the pain returns… or a different part of your body becomes the next thing holding you back.

We work with all kinds of active people, from runners to climbers, cyclists to hikers.

But they all have one thing in common.

They want to get out of pain, but they want more than another fix.

They want to understand their body and have more control over what happens next, rather than waiting for the next running injury, back problem or sports injury to stop them again.

You don't need to be an athlete

You might simply want to hike, climb, lift, run, travel and stay active without constantly wondering what your body will let you do.

Ultimately, you want to build a body that’s capable, resilient and able to keep up with the life you want to live, for the long term.

Stop asking what's wrong and start asking why?

Where you feel the pain is only part of the story of back pain or sports injury.

Scans often show wear and tear, but they don’t explain why one person develops pain while another with similar changes doesn’t.

To build a complete picture, we use movement assessments, measurements, training data and live HRV data to understand:

Together, this gives us the evidence to focus on what actually needs to change.  So your time and effort go into the things that will make the biggest difference.

"Working with Julie has been life-changing"

“She got me round my last marathon without knee pain after just 3 weeks of working together. Now, I’m more supple, mobile & have less headaches and I’m not suffering recurring injuries. The best bit is I feel more capable. I’ve even signed up for my first ultra marathon”

What changes when you change the right things?

Stuck in the cycle

Instead of feeling like things are finally getting better… only for the next flare-up or sports injury to knock you backwards…

What changes

When you are no longer stuck in the cycle, things start making sense.

"The impact on my whole well-being is incredible"

Olly, 1:1 client, Ramsbottom

"I’m approaching my daily routine with a new vigour and sense of calm. I don't hurt anymore! The impact on my whole wellbeing is incredible"

Let's find out if this is the right approach for you

1 Let's talk

Let’s have a chat.

We’d love to hear what’s been happening, what you’ve already tried. But also what makes you tick and what you’d love to get back to and the adventures that inspire you.

You can ask us anything.

If it feels like the right next step, we’ll book your Full Body MAP.

2 Full body MAP

Your Body MAP will uncover what’s really driving your pain, not just where it hurts.

This isn’t about rushing to a diagnosis or handing you a sheet of exercises. It’s about taking the time to understand what’s really going on.

We’ll explain what we see as we go and there’s plenty of time to ask questions. Nothing is about pushing through pain.

You’ll know we’ve looked beyond your symptoms and started to build a much bigger picture of what’s really going on.

3 Your results

We’ll analyse everything from your Body MAP before we meet again.

We’ll go through the results together, so you can clearly see what’s been happening, what’s really driving your pain and where we think the biggest opportunities for change are. You will get a copy of your results too.

You’ll leave with a much clearer understanding of what’s really driving your pain and what’s most likely to make a lasting difference.

You’ll also know what I’d recommend next, with no pressure to decide on the day.

"I was amazed at how thorough the MOT was. Every possible measurement was taken to find any misalignments in my body. I definitely felt in safe hands. Julie really know what she is doing” Rick, Ramsbottom

""A LOT more hands on and investigation than the NHS" Christine, Ramsbottom

Hi I'm Julie

I didn’t start this work because everything in my body worked perfectly.

I know what it’s like to do all the right things, get back to running and think you’ve fixed the problem… only to find yourself dealing with another injury a few months later.

That experience is part of why I became so interested in looking beyond where it hurts and understanding the bigger picture.

Today I work with runners, cyclists, climbers, hikers and other active people who don’t just want another temporary fix. They want to understand their body, get back to doing what they love and stay capable for the adventures still ahead.

"Julie helps me get the most from what my body can do."

“Within 3 months, I was going box-to-box like Bellingham again and now I’ve run for 22 minutes and even been skiing. Julie challenges conventional wisdom, keeps me accountable, and shows what’s truly possible.”

“I’ve seen such an improvement that I am thrilled that I have returned to running.  I even completed a sprint triathlon for the first time in 6 years.”

Alasdair, Ramsbottom

"It's given me the confidence to get back running which I didn't think I would do again. It's been liberating! Through this process I will end up better than before the pain started. So in a way it was a bit of a wakeup call and will set me up for the future."

Pam, St Helens

What clients say about working with us

"Julie has in my opinion a unique approach to yoga in that her knowledge, explanation of movement and passion are the best I have seen.

Each pose, posture and breath work are broken down carefully and controlled so benefits are ultimately achieved. Her classes are always different and varied.

Julie has also helped me with issues I have with my shoulder and lower back as I suffer pain & discomfort by providing me with 121 sessions (a lot more hands on & investigation than NHS).

I can highly recommend Julie Tod."

If you are looking at improving your running technique and remaining injury free, this is a great investment.  Julie and Phil are both passionate about running.  The sessions are easy to follow, they keep things interesting and are individualised to meet your own goals and requirements.

From individual stretching programs to running form and breath-work, it’s all structured so you can get the most out of your time out on the trail (or road).  Having completed level 1 and now coming to the end of level 2 rebuild to run course my running has greatly improved.  I no longer hell strike, my form is more consistent and I have learned to consciously relax my body whilst running.

It’s not a magic formula but if you are willing to take on board new ideas and put in the work, I believe you too could have outstanding results.

As I was approaching my 60s I have really enjoyed getting into doing triathlons... but then I started with pain in my hip.   I saw a physio, osteopath, had an X-ray and evan an orthopaedic surgeon.  The view was that it was an overuse strain, but it would not go away.

You’re the first person I’ve met (and I have met A LOT of healthcare practitioners, holistic therapists, yoga teachers etc. in the last few years!) who has understood where I’m at and what the real issues are so for that I will always be grateful.

I have already recommended you to other people in a similar place. I felt pretty bleak when I look back where I was but this has definitely helped me feel positive about the future in terms of what I can achieve.

I believe the Oxygen Advantage really did help deal with altitude better on my trek to Everest base camp.  As we ascended both Chris and I could feel the lack of oxygen but using the nasal breathing techniques you taught us, we seemed to adjust faster than the rest of the group.

There were also several members suffering with symptoms of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) we didn’t have any problems. I was also very surprised that my SPO2 levels, as mine barely dropped below 90.  The other benefit now I am back home , I  sleeping like a baby and no longer snoring!"

I want to say a massive thanks to Phil for all his efforts to get me and Dave ready for our trek to Everst Base Camp.  It really helped me mentally prepare for the trip knowing I had these Oxygen Advantage breathing techniques up my sleeve to deal with the altitude.

I would say to anyone looking to get those extra gains that this technique really helps open up your airwaves and get more oxygen into your system. This in turn helps you go for longer, recover quicker and push yourselves that extra level.

Julie supported me through my cancer treatment and after an operation on my neck. She was kind, considerate and creative in her yoga exercises to aid my recovery. She was flexible with the sessions depending on my fatigue and health needs.  Julie has taught me some invaluable stretches and exercises to restore my muscles and body after such trauma. I am delighted to say i now have full use of my arm and shoulder. I still regularly practise everything she taught me. She has a wealth of knowledge and experience.

By assessing my body’s entire range of movement Julie was able to identify the route-cause of the adductor strain and develop a program to address this. Over the weeks we improved movement in other areas of the body, like my back, shoulders, neck and core, and I saw how this impacted the injured area.  Although I’m still conscious of my injury,  I am now hiking and running without any pain. I am feeling much less stiff, have a great range of motion – and importantly – I don’t hurt anymore! I am definitely approaching my daily routine with a new vigour, and sense of wellness and calm. The impact on my whole well-being is incredible.

I took a back to basics running course with Phil & Julie last year (just after completing an ultra-marathon) because I wanted to improve certain aspects of my running… mainly around running more efficiently over a longer distance… what happened next was Phil & Julie turned everything upside down by showing me what was really important…Fixing issues in my technique, balance & body alignment!  I can’t speak highly enough of how hard they work & how much effort they put into to what they do. The difference they’ve made to my running & overall wellbeing is incredible… in fact, so much so that I’ve just booked on their next course!

I was paying for an osteopath, waiting for the NHS.  But it felt like there was no end in sight.  But working with Julie on the corrective exercise has been very successful.  I feel I am getting stronger each week. It’s been liberating!  Through this process I will end up better than before the pain started.  So in a way it was a bit of a wakeup call and will set me up for the future.

After 10 years of playing football, I was suffering back and knee pain and issues. I was thinking of packing it in. But after regular yoga classes with Julie and some 121 sessions, have seen a massive decrease in injuries and I am still playing!

Oxygen Advantage training has had a huge positive impact in many aspects of my life. My running and cycling has significantly improved, finding myself with more energy and not gasping for breath powering up hills. In addition, the breathing techniques have enabled me to recharge myself, improving mental clarity, reduce stress and get better sleep. Julie is a fantastic coach, who refines your training plan for your unique requirements. Just do it.

I can’t praise Julie and Phil enough for the coaching on our recent chi running course. The depth of knowledge, ability to guide you clearly and passion for improving their students’ techniques and confidence is beyond what I was expecting when I signed up. We were lucky to have several classes which ended up being one-to-one so benefitted from tailored sessions, but even in bigger groups, nobody is left behind or held back. Fantastic work and a good laugh at the same time.

I have been attending the beginners yoga class since January 2018. I had not done any yoga before but Julie is very welcoming and supportive and the class has a positive, inclusive atmosphere. Julie gives clear, easy to follow guidance throughout the class, and is very knowledgeable about precisely how each pose affects the body.
